The Divided Island challenges the hostility-driven narratives often perpetuated by mainstream media, offering instead a pursuit of truth through deeply personal testimonies — from those whose lives, homes, and homeland were torn apart, to a new generation of Cypriots yearning for reconciliation.
Directed by Turkish Cypriot filmmaker Cey Sesiguzel and co-produced by Greek Cypriot Andreas Tokkallos, the film strives to present a balanced, shared understanding of a complex history — fostering dialogue and hope for a peaceful resolution to the enduring Cyprus problem.
Cyprus is my ancestral home, and I feel a deep connection to the island and its heritage. My family suffered a great personal loss with the murder of my grandfather by an EOKA terrorist. Despite this traumatic and heartbreaking event, my father never taught us to hate our fellow Greek Cypriots. Instead, he taught us about the poison of fanatical nationalism.
I feel it is my duty to make this film and ensure it reaches audiences around the world. The film explores universal themes that will resonate with millions who have experienced the aftermath of war, division, and generational trauma.
